Importance of Vitamin D

Vitamin D refers to a group of fat-soluble  responsible for enhancing intestinal absorption of calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphate and zinc. In humans, the most important compounds in this group are vitamin D3  and vitamin D2 . Both of these can be ingested from the diet and from supplements.[ The body can also synthesize vitamin D  in the skin, from cholesterol, when sun exposure is adequate (hence its nickname, the “sunshine vitamin”).

Yes it is true that you can get vitamin D thru the exposure to sun. Which is a great source if vitamin D. But I bet you didn’t know is that putting on sunscreen will block that all important source of Vitamin D.

Vitamin D is oil soluble, which means you need to eat fat to absorb it. It is naturally found mainly in fish oils, fatty fish, and to a lesser extent in beef liver, cheese, egg yolks, and certain mushrooms. In addition, vitamin D is widely added to many foods such as milk and orange juice, and can also simply be consumed as a supplement.

Further more, inadequate levels of vitamin D can lead to a weakened immune system, increased cancer risk, poor hair growth, and osteomalacia, a condition of weakened muscles and bones. Conversely, excess vitamin D can cause the body to absorb too much calcium, leading to increased risk of heart attack and kidney stones.
